GINGER - Ambhos

 


Being used for centuries as a natural medicine, Ginger is an indispensable ingredient of Daadi maa ka khazaana from her kitchen. Be it be the task of preparing healthy and tasty food or providing safe home remedies for different ailments, ginger has never disappointed us. It has proved to be effective against a number of ailments ranging from common colds to cancers. The icing on the cake being that it adds flavour and spice to the food thus making it scrumptious instead of bland food for better health.

Ginger is a herbaceous perennial extensively known for its medicinal qualities. It has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory effects and is known to:

1. Prevent indigestion

2. Treat common colds

3. Ease period pain

4. Relax sore muscles and reduce osteoarthritis.

5. Maintain healthy body weight and blood pressure.

6. Restrict and curb cancer growth.

7. Prevent nausea and motion sickness.

8. Maintain cholesterol levels.

9. Increase immunity on whole.

Different ways of consumption lead to different results. The common ways of consuming ginger include :

1. Adding it as a spice to the food.

2. Boiling it in water and adding lemon juice to it.

3. Intaking powdered ginger with water or honey.

4. As a pickle, salad, or sugar-coated candy.

As the saying goes "Excess of anything is bad" so goes well with the ginger too. If consumed within the healthy range it reaps the above-mentioned benefits. Else if more than 4 grams of it is consumed during the day, it might lead to mild side effects including stomach discomfort, heartburn, and reduced blood clotting leading to excessive blood loss even on a small injury. However, the recommended range for toddlers and pregnant women is not more than 1 gram per day.

Pregnant and lactating mothers are recommended to consult their doctors before consuming it. Patients with heart problems should also avoid it. Even if you are about to undergo surgery or have just gone through one, refrain from consuming ginger. It acts as a blood thinner and may prevent coagulation of blood leading to excessive bleeding during surgeries.

Though there are scientific pieces of evidence but since, most of us practice any of these remedies without expert supervision remember to tread carefully and behave with caution.
